2018 Thanksgiving Pow-Wows

Pow-Wows: a “Circle of Friends”
Monday & Tuesday, November 19th & 20th

We celebrate the Great Spirit of Friendship at our annual “Circle of Friends” Pow-Wows, to celebrate multi-cultural awareness, acceptance of diversity, as well as giving and gratitude.  The children don their own creative costumes and chant and sing together before sharing a friendship snack.

All Preschool and Kindergarten classes gather together in the Gym on Monday, 11/19 at 2:30PM & Tuesday 11/20 at 10:30AM.  All Kinder Works children and their parents are welcome to attend.  We kindly ask parents to attend only one Pow-Wow due to our limited space.

“Something You are Grateful For”

November is the beginning of the season of caring, giving, and gratitude, and in that spirit our Show & Tell will focus on being grateful.

Help your child look at the different ways that he or she shows appreciation… maybe with words, hugs and smiles, pictures or notes, or even by trying to “return the favor” and pay kindness forward!

Please send in a picture (e.g., photo or drawing, collage, mosaic, etc.) of the people, experiences, and /or things for which he/she is most thankful.

November 2018 Theme & Calendar

Our November Theme:
Season of Thanks and Giving

Thanksgiving is a national holiday founded on giving and gratitude.  From the very first Thanksgiving, to the one we celebrate this month, one tradition still holds true: sharing the bounty of nature and our kitchens brings people together, and there are examples of giving and gratitude from past to present.  We will practice ways of saying thanks and being kind this month, and extend throughout the year.

This month, we also learn what “farm-to-table” is all about.  Fall harvest yields vegetables, fruits and grains from the garden, and as it gets colder, farmers prepare for their animals to survive the winter.  How do we grind the wheat to make flour for bread?  How is butter and applesauce made?

Near the end of the month, we will hold our annual POW-WOWs to celebrate friendship by giving gifts we have made, and showing gratitude.

“Practicing Self-Calming Skills”

This is the time of year when we focus on our self calming skills… With each night falling earlier, and Halloween decorations like jack-o-lanterns, spiders, and skeletons, it can be a scary time of year for little ones.  It’s important to teach self-calming skills so children can reassure themselves amidst all the excitement and change.

A child may find comfort in a stuffed toy or a blanket, in a song or memory or thought.  A child may know to take a deep breath, ask for a hug, or distract him or herself with a favorite activity.

Please send your child to school ready to share, or demonstrate how s/he finds comfort and calm.  Maybe another child finds reassurance in the same way, so feelings are validated and relationships are strengthened in this EQ opportunity.
